Create an In-House Office by decluttering your Guest Room with the help of a Storage Facility

Let’s be honest, we all have that one guest room in our home that we’ve converted into a “storage unit” over the years. You know, the one where you store toilet paper rolls, cleaning supplies, fold up tables/chairs and even Amazon cardboard boxes. Don’t you think it’s about time to put that room to good use, perhaps an in-house office? Did you know that having a dedicated home office space is becoming the new must-have room in most households? According to Global Workplace Analytics, there has been a 103% increase in people working from home since 2005 and that’s among the non-self-employed. So if you’re among the percentage of people who are working from home part-time or even full-time, you may want to know more about how to turn that guest room into a home office. Let’s get started!

time-2980690_960_720

  1. This may seem like a no-brainer but the number one issue to deal with when working from home is distractions. Whether it’s the pets, the TV or even household chores – there’s probably going to be something occupying your mind besides work. To help with distractions, it’s best to set up your office away from any TVs. If possible, finish your household chores the day or night before. The key is to make it a habit and to treat your in-house office like you would at work. Strictly professional with the utmost discipline. With that said, it’s also important to keep the same routine you would do if you were going to work. To just name a few, I’m talking about getting up early in the morning and actually dressing up like you would if you were to go to work. In other words, that means you must resist the temptation of rolling out of bed and working in your PJs. It’s important to treat your in-house office with respect to work, otherwise, distractions and procrastination will follow.

  1. Believe it or not, the key to staying alert and staying productive is good lighting. Whether you prefer natural lighting or artificial lighting, find out which works best for you. If you’re looking to set up your office near a window, chances are you’re looking to illuminate your room with natural lighting. If so, keep in mind that the sunlight’s point of entry through the window is largely dependent on the time of day. For instance, when it hits noontime, the sunlight may penetrate through your window and reflect off your laptop to create an unsightly glare. This may or may not be distracting. There’s also the off-chance the sun might decide to call in sick from work. If that’s the case, try a desk lamp that closely resembles sunlight. Now if you prefer a more controlled setting then artificial lighting would be the most ideal choice for you. However, you may see an ever-so-slightly increase in your electricity bill, to say the least. This controlled lighting option gives you the freedom to position your light source to even the color displayed. This may take some trial and error to determine which type of lighting works best for you. Needless to say that having the right type of lighting is going to be essential to staying alert and staying productive.

office-581127_960_720

  1. This may also seem like a no-brainer but trust me when I say this, this happens far too often than not – loss of internet connection. Nothing is more frustrating than encountering a bad internet connection in the middle of your work. It can either slap your motivation across the face or slam the brakes on your work momentum and spiral you down the road of frustration. Both of which will completely destroy your productivity in no time. So, if your work requires an internet connection, I think it would be best to invest in proper internet equipment. Cough up a few extra dollars and save yourself from a world of headaches.

3 Long-Term Storage Tips You Should Consider Before Living Abroad in Another Country

Before we dive right in, it’s important to ask yourself how much stuff you need to store and how long you plan on living abroad. If hypothetically speaking, you plan to book the earliest flight to London with the intention of staying abroad for more than a year. I would highly recommend that you move out of your apartment or the place you’re currently staying at to avoid unnecessary monthly payments. Let’s be honest, we all love money (some more than others) so why not save a few hundred dollars from rent. Savvy? So let’s say you decided to take our recommendation. Yay money! Great! But then it hits you, where are you going to store all your belongings now that you don’t have a place to store them. Fortunately, that’s where a storage facility comes in! Storage facilities typically offer a wide range of storage sizes so you’ll have no problem storing all your belongings. Whether you only have a little bit of stuff or whether you have a closet full of stuff, a storage facility will accommodate your every need. A storage facility is a perfect solution for storing your belongings at an affordable price while keeping your stuff safely secured. Most storage facilities pride themselves on their security so you can bet that they’ll have state-of-the-art security features to help ensure you’ll have a peace of mind when traveling. But before you jump onto this idea, check out these 3 long-term storage tips first!

Ojai Self Storage ticket

1. As obvious as this tip may be, you’d be surprised how often this tip gets overlooked. Properly storing and packing. Now, this goes without say. Please make sure that when you’re packaging your boxes or containers to be mindful of your items. Now, what do I mean by this? Don’t toss stuff or randomly stack your items in a box, especially if you’re planning to store your belongings for the long-term. Be mindful of stacking the harder and sturdier items on the bottom of the box and work your way from heavy to light. This is a great way to ensure that your boxes or containers won’t deform and collapse onto one another. You definitely wouldn’t want your heavier boxes smooshing your lighter boxes underneath now, would you?

2. Decide whether or not a climate controlled storage unit is beneficial for you. How would you determine this, you might ask? This is the part where you would sit down in front of your stuff and laser-beam focus on the items that could potentially be damaged if left alone. When I said potentially “damaged”, I’m talking about the items in your possession that are climate sensitive such as wood furniture, electronics, musical instruments and so forth. These climate controlled units, however, are a little more pricey and expensive than the standard storage unit. But the increased cost is well worth it in protecting your belongings in the long run. To a degree, this may even help provide a better peace of mind knowing that your items aren’t subjected to temperature changes.

3. To invest in storage insurance or to not invest in storage insurance? Hmm, that’s a good question to ask oneself, especially if you’re going abroad for a number of years. I strongly suggest looking into storage insurance for precautionary measures. It doesn’t really hurt to add another layer of security to further increase your peace of mind. And in the event of a natural disaster occurring within the facility, you can rest assured knowing that your items are insured. Like the old saying goes, “it’s better safe than sorry.”

Keep Healthy While You’re Moving Homes

Keep Healthy While You’re Moving Homes

Moving_Homes_

Moving can be hard work so you want to make sure to stock up on healthy snacks and stay hydrated. Especially during the summer when the heat can get to unbearable temperatures, you want to make sure that when you’re doing heavy lifting that you keep your body cool and nourished. Whether you are moving in and out of your self storage unit, or moving in and out of a truck, these tips will help keep you strong through the job.

1. Keep water accessible to hydrate — If you are moving into or out of your self storage unit, make sure to have water bottles in a cooler in the car. Don’t forget to drink your water often between trips of moving your items from the car or to the car, especially on a hot summer’s day. If you are moving items between your new home from your old home, make sure to have water bottles at both your new home and old home so they are accessible. This is one of the most forgotten items when arriving at the new home: handy water bottles for when you are unpacking your truck for the first time. Having a case handy will keep you and your family hydrated when unpacking the truck.

drinking_water

2. Drink sports drinks with electrolytes, avoid sodas!— In the times when you are doing extraneous heavy lifting, whether it is moving large appliances in and out of your self storage unit or into and out of your moving truck, you want to have your sports drinks handy to replenish after breaking out in sweat. The electrolytes found in sports drinks such as Gatorade and Powerade can help the body endure heavy lifting and long hours of moving items in and out of your home or self storage unit. Avoid Sodas at all costs during moving because soda dehydrates the body and it will give you a sugar crash. Stick to water and the sports drinks during heavy moving days.

3. Re-energize with healthy snacks—Moving is extremely stressful and sometimes we forget to eat during stressful times. It’s important to energize your body during a move, especially when lifting heavy boxes or moving large appliances. Take constant breaks to reenergize with healthy snacks, such as nuts and energy bars. Readily accessible pre-packaged healthy snacks such as nut packages and energy bars are perfect for quick snacking, especially when you are on the go such as driving in the moving truck.

almonds-healthy_snacks

4. Healthy meals on-the-go to keep your energy flowing —Don’t forget to eat your meals! Snacking is great to hold you over but it’s essential to eat healthy meals to keep your body in top-performance shape for all the packing and lifting that moving requires. Avoid fast-food restaurants that have little-nutrition meals and instead opt for pre-packaged salads with chicken in them or sandwiches from the local deli. Whole foods such as whole grains and white-meats will help keep you nourished and won’t give you the carbohydrate crashes that fast foods give. You can always purchase sandwiches from a deli the day before or on the morning of the move and keep the sandwiches in a cooler when moving. That way, you can eat during a break when unpacking your items into a self storage unit or your new home.

5. Fresh juices for added nourishment to keep you moving—Juices are a healthy option to gain nutrients and keep your blood sugar up when having a long day moving. Fresh juices have the vitamins and fiber to keep you going throughout the day. Moving days are long and hard and you want to make sure you are staying fit and healthy throughout it, or else your body will be overworked and you run the risk of getting sick. Fresh orange juice will keep your immune system strong. Local juice shops can provide you with all the fresh juices you need on moving day.

Moving & De-Cluttering: Make It Easy

How To Get Clutter Moved Out Of Your Home

Spring cleaning or summer moving, the task of de-cluttering or packing is dreadful (yet worthwhile) when done right. Planning, timing and organizing helps stay focused.

Plan Your Move

Sometimes just starting the process is challenging. Where to begin cleaning? Which closet should I start organizing? Which items can I start packing before my official moving date? These questions can be overwhelming and easily result in procrastination. What should you do? The answer is simple: start small!

Small Spaces Are Easier To Clean

Set Aside Time Just For Packing

Often times, even with the best of intentions, multitasking ends up being less productive. With daily demands of family, home and work, we are already stretched for time. Adding a home move to that juggle can amount to high levels of anxiety. Additionally, studies have shown that multitasking can cause us to get more tired which is counterproductive to your plan of staying focused and motivated to get through that long packing list. Read more about why Neuroscientists Say Multitasking Literally Drains The Energy Reserves Of Your Brain.

Multitasking Drains Productivity

Organize Your Space

The whole idea of spring cleaning is to freshen up your space by de-cluttering and well…cleaning! Which means: actually clean out your space by removing unnecessary items. Simply shifting items from one place to another without deciding on its need in your home is another form of procrastination. For instance, if you’re packing for a move, think how much time and energy you will save by getting rid of these extra items before you move into your new home. The laborious task of packing and moving items from your old to new place is undoubtedly tiring mentally and physically. By not adding unwanted extras to your boxes will, at the least, save you some time even when it’s time to unpack.

Moving homes or cleaning is not fun (not for most right?). But, managing it by planning, scheduling uninterrupted time and organizing will get you through it. Most importantly, remember that it will get done!

Extra, Extra! Storage Units Offer Spacious Options When You Don’t Have Room At Home

event vendor storage locations

Let’s face it, we all wish we had extra room. To have less clutter at home, to store extra furniture, or to be more efficient by organizing business equipment to make your living space, well, more livable! Until you renovate, get a bigger home or move into an office space, there is a more affordable option to get that extra storage room without having to relocate!

Medium-Sized Storage Unit to Store Content of a One-Bedroom Apartment

organize clutter in storageDid you know that a 10′ x 10′ can fit the entire contents of a typical one-bedroom apartment? And yes, that includes major appliances such as a washer, dryer, refrigerator and furniture like a mattress and a couch! Depending on the size of your furniture and your packing skills, you may
also fit in an heirloom piece like a grandfather clock or couple of antique chests and cabinets.

A generously-sized space, a 10×10 unit is ideal for storing needs in-between moves that will require renting a space for a month or longer. It is also a convenient solution for businesses that have out grown their current storage capacity or are home-based requiring a more efficient way to organize and access their business equipment.

Affordable Storage Solutions for Businesses

Considered a medium-sized option in most facilities, a 10×10 self-storage unit offers a quick and easily accessible option for businesses to store extra supplies, boxes of paperwork, or bulky equipment. From home-based event planners to contractors who service a wide service area, vendors enjoy the convenience of having a centrally located space that is manageable in terms of organizing and rental rates.

Space for Event & Party Supplieswedding supplies storage

Event vendors have to keep up with the latest fads. Which means their list of supplies is always growing. Inflatable fun like bounce houses, Chiavari Chairs, large circular banquet tables, or centerpiece vases with elaborate fillers to decorate a large venue take up a lot of space but are also the key pieces of a party planners business. A good sized storage unit can be used to categorize and better manage the collection of themed decorations. Expensive and fragile items like the versatile glass vases that are used for so many different events can be securely stored without the risk of damage that often worries the budget-conscious planner working with highly sensitive brides. Additionally, a storage facility near their most frequented venues can cut down a lot of time, energy and stress when things don’t go as planned and a quick backup is needed.

vending machine equipment in storageVending Machine Equipment Storage

Local suppliers such as vending machine equipment providers deal with large, heavy equipment. Unsold machines and extra servicing parts can be stored in a 10 by 10 unit and moved easier into trucks for delivery from storage facilities that have drive-up access. There is also the added benefit of peace of mind when choosing a storage facility that is equipped with additional security options like 24/7 video surveillance or individual unit alarms and alerts so that your  expensive machines are not easy vandalism targets.

Business File Storage

storage small boxes shelves
Every business has years of records and paperwork that needs to be stored. Even with the expanding need to go paperless, many businesses know how crucial having hard copies of important agreements can be in potential legal proceedings or if their company computers are hacked or infected with a virus. While the need to access these documents is unlikely, if the need does arise, being able to dig up a file in 7 years of storage boxes can become a costly and time consuming task. Storage units are a simple way to place these boxes sorted by year. Businesses can use the space to create a system of discarding older files as they replace them with more recent year documents.

Photographers and Videographers

props studio storage spaceBackdrops, photo booths, set furniture, studio props, lighting equipment and camera stands are all part of the creative workings of a photographer or videographer. For professionals who spend so much time on the road between events or shoots, being able to quickly provide a large selection of options to their clients means a better chance of securing a contract.

Storing Surplus Inventory

Keeping up with demands with on-hand inventory can be daunting, especially with unpredictable customer preferences. Storing additional inventory by stocking up gives owners and managers the leeway to purchase supplies in the off-season (often times at lower prices!) in preparation for their peak season demands.

Make Space for your 2017 Resolutions

Behind on your 2017 Resolutions? Here is how you can still clean up your act!

New Year’s Resolutions often are set at the peak of the excitement and celebration of the beginning of a year. Starting afresh with a positive mindset; working towards new goals as you make this year better than the one before. Unfortunately, as life happens, the path to meeting these resolutions is often abandoned. Since home organizing tends to be a common resolution, what better time to remind you how easy and simple meeting that goal can be?

storage_resolutionsLarge lawn decorations that earned you the “best lights on the block” title, the hand-knitted sweater that your aunt gave you that would be unfashionable to wear in February but you can’t bear to donate, and those baking gadgets you thought you wanted to challenge Martha Stewart with beyond the holiday entertaining season are cluttering your relaxation space. It’s okay to set these things aside and get back your home to before the holiday chaos happened!

By temporarily putting away your spur-of-the-moment holiday collection, you will feel less stressed. As you feel more relaxed, your focus and energy recharges. And voila! You are back to thinking about your goals and how you plan on accomplishing them. So, don’t give up your dream of baking the triple-layered chocolate cake embellished with the Star Wars figurines you won as your white elephant gift. Just allow yourself some time and space by putting away the items which, at least at the moment, are causing anxiety every time your eyes catch them in the corner of your living room or in the garage as you drive off to work.

Self-storage facilities provide the perfect (and affordable!) place to safely store away the items you’re simply not ready to use yet. With many storage locations offering a range of unit sizes and 24-hour gate access, you have the convenience of choosing the right space for your needs and budget plus access your belongings whenever you are ready to kick-off your new year resolution! After all, the year has just begun!
